Prunus pumila v. besseyi
This deciduous shrub grows at elevations from 3000 to 8000 feet from New Mexico to the Dakotas. The glossy green leaves turn a lovely orange-red color in the fall. New growth is a rich red. Masses of fragrant white flowers appear before the leaves emerge in the spring. Black berries develop in the summer, attracting birds and other wildlife. Plant in full sun and well-drained soils, and provide periodic deep irrigation.
